Reel Style: Dr Megan Hunt, Body of Proof

28.2.13

This edition of Reel Style looks at Dr Megan Hunt from ABC's Body of Proof. A former neurosurgeon and now medical examiner. Megan Hunt was a brilliant, world class neurosurgeon until a life-changing car accident prevented, and still prevents her from continuing to work in the operating room. Now she uses her vast medical knowledge and investigative instincts to solve the medical mysteries of the dead and bring those responsible for their deaths to justice. Hunt is played by Dana Delany.

Hunt favours great tailoring, structured handbags and mega high heels.

So how can you achieve her look?

Discovering DC: Leesburg

22.2.13

This edition of 'Discovering DC' features Leesburg, VA from the perspective of Carrie from French Toast Vintage!

What's your history with Leesburg, VA  and DC?
I was born and raised in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, but moved to Leesburg about 6 years ago to study Fashion Merchandising at the Art Institute of Washington. I worked at Annie Creamcheese in Georgetown as Assistant Manager for a year, and then South Moon Under in Reston for a year, before opening my e-commerce boutique French Toast Vintage.

Discovering Leesburg - What are your favourite places to shop/eat/go with friends/people watch?
Jasmine Chinese Cuisine - I like to go here for sushi because it is kind of a hidden gem and not very often packed, making it a quite place to catch up with friends over sushi and saki. It's even built in an old mill!

Firebirds Wood Fired Grill- Amazing happy hour with $5 martinis!

Vintage 50- Lounge atmosphere in this local brewery. I can't seem to get anything other than the Chicken Carbonara Pasta. Best Bloody Mary. Seriously.

Swoon- This boutique is very trendy and a good place to find accessories and their merchandising is really well done!

Black Shutter Antiques- If you are a vintage fiend like myself, you can get lost in this 20 room house filled with antiques. The top floor is where the clothing is and you can easily spend a couple hours there.

The Pink Shop- This shop is in a pink house and offers novelty gift items (diamond shaped ice cube trays anyone?) and Virginia souvenirs.

Perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon in Leesburg?
The perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon is to take advantage of the beautiful landscape and historic downtown here. I like to go for a run on the W&OD trail (it goes all the way to Alexandria!) and stop by South Street Under for a coffee and breakfast sandwich before heading home. I love to walk around the Leesburg Outlets to shop (Barney's, BCBG, and Off SAKS) and people watch. When the weather is warmer, Tarara Winery offers outdoor concerts to listen to while you enjoy a bottle of wine. To finish up your Saturday, stop by Razzle Dairy Bar and have an icecream cone swirled with flavors like cappuccino or cotton candy.

Mougin and Piquard for J Crew

19.2.13

I've been thinking about watched alot recently. Every year I get the bug for purchasing a new one, and even though I adore my Cartier, I always love to see what else is out there.

These gorgeous Mougin and Piquard for J Crew Minuit Watches really are perfect. Mougin and Piquard was established in 1926 by two friends who moved to Paris from Switzerland to mark their mark in the wristwatch world. Modelled after classic male designs from their archive, these Art Deco inspired pieces are assembled in Switzerland using a Swiss quartz movement.

I think the navy is perhaps my favourite- but for other colours and designs click here.

Brilliant Ballet Flats @ J Crew

16.2.13

So after several days of rain the sun is shining! And of course this has got me thinking about shoes for spring! I love nothing more than a chic ballet flat, and I don't have to look very far to see what's on offer at J Crew.

Check out my favourites below. For more flats from J Crew click here.

Presidential Innovation Fellows Program: Apply Now!

15.2.13

Fancy applying for something different? Applications are now being accepted for the Presidential Innovation Fellow Program!

Launched last year, the program the Presidential Innovation Fellows program recruits top innovators and entrepreneurs from the private sector for 6-12 month “tours of duty” in government to help develop innovative solutions in areas of national significance.

18 inaugural fellows arrived last August, and through partnering with government innovators, have been involved on five projects.

Some of these include:

  • Open Data Initiatives have unleashed data from the vaults of the government as fuel for entrepreneurs and innovators to create new apps, products, and services that benefit the American people in myriad ways and contribute to job growth.
  • RFP-EZ has created a new online marketplace and built tools that make it easier for innovative small tech businesses to bid on government contracts, while also making it easier for government contracting officers to identify the bids that offer the best value for taxpayers.
  • Blue Button for America has moved personal health records ahead significantly by giving millions of veterans and other Americans massively improved, secure access to their own health information.
  • Better Than Cash is working with an array of foreign and non-governmental partners to transition “the last mile” of international development assistance payments from cash to electronic mobile money, resulting in increased funding transparency and more impact for American taxpayer dollars.
  • MyUSA (formerly MyGov) has reimagined how citizens can interact with government, developing a prototype of an online system that allows people to more easily find and access the information and services that are right for them from across government.

As stated in a recent blog post, the White House is also looking for:

"Applicants to work on the next phases of the Open Data Initiatives, MyData Initiatives (including Blue Button for America), RFP-EZ, and MyUSA projects. We are also inviting applications from those who would like to help launch the following new projects:

Disaster Response and Recovery will collaboratively build and “pre-position” critical tech tools ahead of future emergencies or natural disasters in order to mitigate economic damage and save lives.

Cyber-Physical Systems will work with government and industry to create standards for a new generation of inter operable, dynamic, and efficient “smart systems”—an “industrial Internet”—that combines distributed sensing, control, and data analytics to help grow the economy and new high-value American jobs.

21st Century Financial Systems will work to move the financial accounting systems of Federal agencies out of the era of large-scale, agency-specific implementations to one that favors more nimble, modular, scalable, and cost-effective approaches.

Innovation Toolkit will develop a suite of tools that empowers our Federal workforce to respond to national priorities more quickly and more efficiently.

Development Innovation Ventures will help enable the US government to identify, test, and scale breakthrough solutions to the world’s toughest problems.

We are looking for incredibly talented, entrepreneurial people from a diverse array of backgrounds and with a wide range of experiences. Many of the Fellowship roles require coding and other tech skills, but not all do. We are also looking for gifted and accomplished change agents with skills in user experience design, product management, project management, business development, operations reengineering, and more.  In a nutshell, we are looking for people who can help make big things happen rapidly to advance the public good."
